So the recent news of the Watchmen prequel has been circulating and I could not be happier. The original Watchmen was a masterpiece in both comics and literature as it harnessed real world issues, characters with immense depth and an ending that provokes anyone’s philosophical sensibilities. Now DC comics is preparing to tell the story before the story. Though the original creators will not be on the team many notable artists and writers have been confirmed for the upcoming series.

The issues are proposed to be made into a set of mini series’ that tells the unexplained origins of the main characters. With the original Watchmen only taking a few steps into the characters’ past, this new series could be just what the fans needed to further enhance their love for these memorable characters.

Then again, there already has been a lot of criticism from the comic community raising the question if whether there really needs to be a prequel. Even Alan Moore, the original writer for the series, has disclosed opposition to the series in addition to his already disfavored opinion of the film. There definitely is precedent for great series’ being dulled by prequelization. But there are always two sides of every coin. Expanding the origin stories of Watchmen may in fact bring the narrative to a greater sense of completion.

My opinion would be to keep an open mind and look forward to the greatness that could be had with this new series. If this prequel does prove to be a mere shadow of the greatness that was Watchmen then I’m sure comic book fans will be more than happy to sweep memory of it under the rug. But until release, I will definitely be exploding with anticipation to see Rorshach throw somebody down an elevator shaft.
