Sadly to say, this series is growing dangerously close to the “Meh, I don’t need to read this anymore,” pile. Detective Comics #5 had a lot of promise for our Dark Knight as it seemed to feature the fiercer and drearier tones that make Batman such a serious entity in comic books. Though this issue does retain some of those elements, displaying a Joker obsessed horde bent on doing away with everything Batman, there just was not enough narrative quality to make the reader interested in the continuing story. In the last issue Batman barely survived the clutches of the Dollmaker only to watch him escape. The story continues with Batman now on a path that will eventually clash with the Penguin but the question must be asked: how does this all fit together? Where is the Joker? Where is the Dollmaker? Why is half the issue made into a confusing sub-story about Catwoman and Hugo Strange’s son? Thoroughly confused and unsettled, the reader may be very inclined to drop this series, lest the next issue be utterly mind blowing, or at least mildly inflating.
