Comic Review: Defenders #1

By Rafael A. Hernandez

Avengers assemble! Oh wait, wrong team. Sorry about that. Defenders…assemble? Not quite the epic start as hoped for but it will do. Marvel has just revamped The Defenders series and we are all flustered with anticipation. Yes? Okay not really. But it is not to say that this new beginning of Doctor Strange’s rag tag group is anything to laugh at and with a new out of control Hulk on the block, there really isn’t anyone laughing. This group is not in need of individuality, having the likes of Silver Surfer and Iron Fist (just to name a couple) on the team. But these characters appear a bit underplayed as each of their introductory pages seem like just another hyped semblance of past team based comics. However impressed I am at seeing Red She-Hulk scare a herd of bulls or watching Namor float up from the oceans is irrelevant when I am looking for a bit more narrative integrity. This issue is very general and does more to entice the reader to the characters’ individual function rather than their purpose to the story. Put plain, Defenders #1 is a great introduction to the team but a mediocre introduction to their story. When we see the team in action, ousting their foes, then maybe some greater appreciation can be achieved.
